About this project

Why I chose this costume

How I made this costume

San came about both from my love of the Studio Ghibli films, but also my love of nature and the environment. The movie sends a powerful message in regards to sustainability and working with nature, and I use my projects to help spread awareness.

For the photoshoot, I took this costume to Avatar Grove in British Columbia. Avatar Grove is one of the oldest old growth forests in Canada, and was a perfect setting for a protector of the forest.

Materials used:

- fabric

- faux fur

- faux leather

- 3D prints

- EVA craft foam

- beads

- wooden rods

San is a wild wolf girl who spends her days running through the forest. I decided on an original design for this look, heavily based off her canon outfit but with my own additions.

The fabric and furs are heavily weathered with an airbrush to give a worn and ragged look, and faux leather strips are used to imitate hand stitching.

The mask is 3D printed, with texture added to imitate hand carving.

The spear and dagger both use a wooden rod for the handle. The blades are made from EVA foam, painted and textured to imitate bone.
